SIMI Assembling Large Wärtsilä Power Plant Engines with Enerpac SBL1100 Hydraulic Gantry

Leading Italian heavy lift and transportation company, SIMI, has used its Enerpac SBL1100 hydraulic gantry to assemble Wärtsilä power plant engines at the Ime Power power plant in Termoli, Italy. A combination of the SBL1100 gantry, Enerpac skidding rollers and track-mounted jacks were used to build the four 305t engines in a nearby temporary structure.

SIMI was responsible for the transportation and installation of all four Wärtsilä engines. For ease of transportation, each engine is delivered completely disassembled. Once on-site the Enerpac SBL1100 gantry system was used to lift and assemble the various components, progressively to completely rebuild the engine.

Once fully assembled, with overall dimensions 14.5 x 6 x 5.8 meters including engine, air collector, turbine and oil, the engine was lifted using the Enerpac SBL1100 gantry and transported into the power plant on SPMT trailers. According to a SIMI spokesperson, the SBL1100 gantry provided a safe and highly precise lifting solution, which was essential in a project of this kind where both vertical and horizontal movements were required. “Horizontal movements were carried out using Enerpac skidding rollers, and vertical lifts performed using track-mounted jacks, allowing us to position each component with great accuracy.”

The SBL1100 is Enerpac’s highest capacity hydraulic telescopic gantry. Equipped with three stage lifting cylinders, the SBL1100 lifts up to 12m at the top of the third stage and can handle up to 10,484kN at the top of the first stage.

As standad, the SBL1100 features an Intelli-Lift wireless control system allowing unobstructed views of the load. The wireless system ensures automatic synchronisation of lifting with accuracy of 24mm and automatic synchronisation of travel with accuracy of 15mm.
